Career coaching

Seeking certainty in your career; sexier than you might have thought!

A contribution by Lemongrass coach Janique Lock-Wienk

Having certainty as a career anchor - "I don't like that at all! That I value that so much?!" says my client who is in the process of figuring out what direction she wants to take in her career. The bottom line is that she doesn't find it that 'sexy', her need for security and a steady income. It clashes with her independent, free-spirited and adventurous side. Yet the importance of security continues to impose itself on her in different ways/through different exercises. We cannot avoid it and explore what values lie beneath the 'security' factor. She realises that this is precisely the value she attaches to freedom and being able to fend for herself. She wants to be in control of her life, of her schedule and have space and money to take beautiful trips and see some of the world. Without the foundation of a steady income - and the security that comes with it, she is left with anxiously little room to move freely.

With this realisation, it is clear to the client what she has to do in her career and she can now sell well to herself why she decides to stay with her current employer. She also decides to use her entrepreneurship and to 'jobcraft' in order to cater more to her creative, development-oriented side and thus make her work more in line with her career values. She also sees opportunities to use her creativity more in her private life.
