ACT

Go crazy and bring change to your life with ACT

Have you ever heard of ACT? It stands for Acceptance Commitment Training/Therapy and is one of the coaching methods used by some of our coaches at LemonGrass Coaching. This approach teaches you how to break free from dysfunctional patterns that may have crept into your life. For example, the tendency to play small, suppress your emotions, avoid confrontation, or struggle with perfectionism.

One of the exercises used to increase your psychological flexibility and free yourself from ingrained patterns is that you are asked to approach things in a different way than you are used to. It’s about challenging yourself to do something a little wild or unexpected. Here are some fun, creative examples from clients of how they've put this into practice.

  • Giving your nails a completely different color than you're used to (a beautiful, daily physical reminder that you’re working on your personal growth).
  • Deliberately making a few spelling mistakes in an email
  • For once not going to a party you don't feel like going to at all
  • Starting the day with your dinner and ending it with breakfast
  • Taking a different route to work

Thinking 'practice what you preach', I went down a mega scary slide at the Tikkie pool this summer, with one of my children. Not really worth repeating, haha, but it did give me energy afterwards to surprise myself in my behaviour and so break free from my preconceived notion 'that I don't dare go down such a slide'. I really do! 😉
