Seeking certainty in your career; sexier than you might have thought!

A contribution by Lemongrass coach Janique Lock-Wienk

Having certainty as a career anchor - "I don't like that at all! That I value that so much?!" says my client who is in the process of figuring out what direction she wants to take in her career. The bottom line is that she doesn't find it that 'sexy', her need for security and a steady income. It clashes with her independent, free-spirited and adventurous side. Yet the importance of security continues to impose itself on her in different ways/through different exercises. We cannot avoid it and explore what values lie beneath the 'security' factor. She realises that this is precisely the value she attaches to freedom and being able to fend for herself. She wants to be in control of her life, of her schedule and have space and money to take beautiful trips and see some of the world. Without the foundation of a steady income - and the security that comes with it, she is left with anxiously little room to move freely.

With this realization, the client gains clarity about her next steps in her career. She can now confidently justify to herself why she has decided to stay with her current employer. Additionally, she chooses to embrace her entrepreneurial side and engage in job crafting to better align her role with her creative and development-oriented nature, ensuring her work reflects her career values more closely. She also recognizes opportunities to channel her creativity more actively in her personal life, bringing a sense of balance and fulfillment across both areas.
